Sorrow prepares you for joy. It violently sweeps everything out of your house, so that new joy can find space to enter. It shakes the yellow leaves from the bough of your heart, so that fresh, green leaves can grow in their place. It pulls up the rotten roots, so that new roots hidden beneath have room to grow. Whatever sorrow shakes from your heart, far better things will take their place.
Weep like the waterwheel, that green herbs may spring up from the courtyard of your soul.
Behold the struggle of the porters with the load! Such is the effort of he who sees the truth of things. Burdens are the foundation of ease, and bitter things are the forerunners of enjoyment. Paradise is encompassed with things we dislike to do, while the fires of hell are encircled with our desires.
Wherever the candle of suffering has been lit,
hundreds of thousands of loving souls are burnt.
Those lovers who are near to God,
are like moths to the candle of His face.
O heart, go where souls are sincere toward you,
and can be your coat of mail against suffering,
and give you a place in their hearts,
that they can fill you with the wine of love, like a cup.
They will open the book of the soul,
and reveal the hidden mysteries to you.
Take up your place in their souls!
Make your home in the sky!
